Croatian Academic and Research Network – CARNet celebrates 20th anniversary

On October 3rd, 2011, Croatian Academic and Research Network - CARNet marks 20th anniversary of launching of the CARNet project.

It was on October 3rd, 1991. that a first meeting of the Committee for the establishment of the Croatian Academic and Research Network - CARNet took place. Its members were Mr. Darko Bulat, (Institute "Ruđer Bošković"), Mr. Ivan Marić (University Computing Center - Srce), Mr. Predrag Pale (Committee Coordinator, Faculty of Electrical Engineering), Mr. Ljubimko Šimičić (Faculty of Science) and Mr. Velimir Vujnović (Faculty of Geodesy, Hvar Observatory).

Committee met on the initiative of Mr. Predrag Pale who was appointed by the then Minister of Science, Technology and Informatics, prof. dr. Ante Čović, and his goal was to organize a network that will allow communication to every scholar or student with all the scientific workers in the Republic of Croatia and all over the world. Also, especially active support to the Committee was provided by the then deputy minister and later minister prof. dr. sc. Branko Jeren.

The whole project of planning, construction and financing of the network CARNet throughout all 20 years was actively followed and supported by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, as well as a number of institutions and partners.

Special contribution to the development of the Croatian Academic and Research Network - CARNet provided University Computing Centre in Zagreb - Srce. Staff and associates of Srce actively supported the construction and maintenance of the network CARNet, and later the establishment of CARNet institution, as well as development of many advanced services for end users of the network CARNet.

Special partnership CARNet has also developed with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Zagreb, and that partnership is ongoing ever since, while the Faculty remains actively involved in the development of services that CARNet builds and maintains.

In the early years, besides establishment of the advanced communication network to all academic institutions in the Republic of Croatia, CARNet achieved two major breakthroughs: the establishment of the first Croatian Internet connection to the world, on November 17th, 1992, which started the age of Internet in the Republic of Croatia, and three months later, on March 27th, 1993, when CARNet registered and started to administer the national top-level Internet domain .hr.

On March 1st, 1995, Croatian Government adopted the Decree on the establishment of the Croatian Academic and Research Network - CARNet as an institution for information and IT infrastructure activities in the systems of the education and science in the Republic of Croatia.

In June 2005. CARNet started the activities to connect the primary and secondary schools to the network CARNet, which rounded the initially intended user base of the academic network.

Among the many pioneering ventures we would like to emphasise the first implementation of a national network based on ATM technology (1995.), the first transmission of video over the network (1996.), facilitation of the first remote lectures (1997.), coordination of the establishment of the Croatian Internet Exchange - CIX ( 1999.), the launch of the first regional Cisco Networking Academy (2000.) and the first exchange of traffic between users over IPv6 (2003).

In recent years, CARNet launched a number of advanced projects and services like the modernization of the network on the gigabit technologies (2003.-2004.), implementation of hosting for online services for secondary and elementary schools - HUSO (2005.), provision of individual access to CARNet network (2006.), launch of the Portal for schools and implementation of the project e-Islands (2007.), establishment of content filtering (2008.) and start of the construction of its own fibre optic infrastructure (2009).
In particular, we emphasize an important role of CARNet in the process of initiation and support to the National Information System for Applications to Universities - NISpVU (2010.), and the development of the web application for managing the schools’ e-Diary.

CARNet network is now the most advanced information and communication network in the Republic of Croatia, which currently connects 1386 schools on 1919 locations and 240 academic institutions on 437 locations.

Croatian Academic and Research Network - CARNet now offers to its users more than 70 services, all aimed at improving the primary and secondary education, higher education and science and the work of pupils, students, teachers, professors and scientists through the usage of the information and communication technologies.

We would like to use this opportunity to once again thank and congratulate all institutions and individuals who were actively involved in the construction and the development of the CARNet network and institution in the past twenty years, and are looking forward to the future cooperation.
