Closing of the 12th CARNet Users Conference – CUC 2010

The 12thCARNet Users Conference – CUC 2010, which lasted from 15thto 17thNovember 2010 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture of the University of Split, ended. The Conference was organised by the Croatian Academic and Research Network – CARNet, under the auspices of the Croatian President, Prof. Ivo Josipović, Ph.D. and the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports.

Entitled "New Challenges", the Conference programme offered 62 papers, 14 workshops, 13 presentations, a film, a panel discussion and a round table. Continuing the tradition, CUC again provided its participants with an opportunity to hear some of the most respectable professionals in the field of information communication technologies. Lectures were held by three invited lecturers - the President of Macedonia, Dr. Gjorgje Ivanov, Dr. Hannes Lubich, Full Professor at the University of Applied Sciences of Northwestern Switzerland, and Michael Wegmann, Senior Product Manager (Microsoft Online).

The 12thCARNet Users Conference was accompanied, for the eleventh time, by the Webfestival, a competition providing an opportunity to authors who publish contents on the web to present and compare their achievements. The topic of this year's Webfestival was educational contents published in Moodle, and the winners, based on the decision brought by the panel of judges, were: Small geographic laboratory (junior category), From the idea to film (cadet category), Financial mathematics (senior category), Chemistry 8 (best applications of multimedia in education), Computer-assisted drawing (best Moodle application).

This year's CUC included a CMS competition entitled "Spruce up the web!". The competition was open for all primary and secondary schools in the Republic of Croatia which create and manage their school webs in CARNet CMS system. Winners of the competition in the senior category, according to the panel of judges, were the Slavka Kolara Elementary School from Herzegovac, Popovac Elementary School from Popovac and Kneza Mislava Elementary School from Kaštel Sućurac. In junior category, the winner was the Drenje Elementary School from Drenje.

CUC Programme Committee also selected the best paper and the best presentation of the Conference – the best paper was "Online preparations for state final exam in computing" (Vesna Tomić, A. G. Matoš Grammar School), whereas the best presentation was "Free open source code software in computer-based elementary school classroom" (Tanja Oreški, Orehovica Elementary School and Predrag Oreški, the Faculty of Teacher Education of the University of Zagreb).

First prizes for winners of the CMS competition were provided by Siemens IT Solutions and Services d.o.o. The awards for best paper and best presentation were provided by Siemens IT Solutions and Services d.o.o., Adriatic Nokia Croatia d.o.o. and Microsoft Croatia d.o.o.

The Conference was attended by 450 accredited participants, and video streaming on CARNet Media on Demand portal made lectures available to all those who were not present at the Conference. This year, for the first time, the Conference was available via mobile phones.
