TEN 155 - high-quality and fast international linkage
On 21 November 2000 at 6.30 p.m. the Croatian Academic and Research Network - CARNet was connected to the fast Pan- European research network TEN-155 (Trans-European Internet Research Network - 155). This increased the speed of the CARNet international link with the Internet to 34 Mbps, which is about 8 times more than the previous completely jammed 4 Mbps. CARNet could request the right to get connected to TEN-155 only when in June 2000 Croatia gained the right to participate in the projects of the Fifth Program of the European union, which, besides the rest, has the aim of developing information society in the European Union countries. Croatia has thus become one of some thirty national academic and research networks in Europe - member of TEN 155, connected by high-speed links. Recently, the European Commission has started also the project GEANT (http://www.dante.net/geant), the future successor of TEN-155, with plans of increasing the link speed of member institutions by 16 times already in the year 2001.
