SmartX (ISSX) information system has been developed for Croatian students, teachers and scientists, and enables the management of various forms of services in an academic environment with the use of advanced smart card technologies.

In the wider student community the project is also know by the name SmartX card (SmartX-ica), because the student card, as one of the key parts of the system, is the new generation of a well-known student card, the X card. One of the innovative applications in this system is also the electronic version of student's matriculation book (indeks) which makes this card an e-Indeks.

This card is important as it connects the user with various services, integrates different services into one virtual service system and, together with computing and information infrastructure, enables the realisation of numerous new services.

The SmartX card has numerous applications. Every day the scope of applications widens with the development of new and the modification of existing software and hardware solutions. The list of places where the card may be used also constantly increases. Some of the SmartX applications developed so far: identification, record keeping, access control, nutrition, PKI: Resources, PKI: Signatures, e-Wallet and e-Payment.
