1st "Modern Technologies in Education - STO" student day

On 25th April 2014, the Faculty of Teacher Education of the University of Zagreb has organized the 1st "Modern Technologies in Education - STO (Suvremene tehnologije u obrazovanju - in Croatian)" student day. The STO is a one-day event intended primarily for students from faculties of education and faculties offering teacher education courses, but it is also open to other students interested in the use of technology in education.

The STO student day was organised by the Croatian Academic and Research Network - CARNet and the Faculty of Teacher Education in Zagreb with the aim of providing the students - future elementary and secondary school teachers and professors - with insight into the new approaches to teaching with the support of technology, designed to fulfil the needs of the new generations of students who are digital natives.

Apart from interesting lectures and workshops on the subject of teaching and learning in the 21st century and the use of ICT in teaching, the participants have had the opportunity to acquaint themselves with specific examples from teaching practice and communicate with innovative teachers who use technology as a support to the education activities with students in their everyday practice.

As part of the 1st STO student day, a competition of student works entitled “Today I am a teacher!” was also organised. According to the decision of the evaluating team, the best work was “Conceptual Art” by Julija Simunić. Amongst the works submitted to the competition, the evaluating team has granted special acknowledgment to “Get to Know Europe”, a multimedia website primarily intended for repetition and knowledge assessment, created by Ana Zavada.

The opening of the event by Mr. Zvonimir Stanić, the CARNet Chief Executive Officer, and Professor Ivan Prskalo, Ph.D., the Dean of the Faculty of Teacher Education, was followed by interesting plenary lectures by Milan Matijević, Ph.D., on the subject of “Technology in Education and Educational Technology: Pedagogical and Didactic Dilemmas” and Mario Dumančić, Ph.D., under the title “Is an "e" all it takes for an e-school?".

In addition to two plenary lectures, six workshops, seven presentations, two series of demonstrations and a panel discussion on the subject of open educational resources were also held.

Throughout the day, the event numbered more than 150 participants. Video recordings of selected lectures and presentations, as well as of the opening and plenary lectures, will be available on the CARNet Media on Demand portal at mod.carnet.hr.
