Croatian Academic and Research Network - CARNet was established in 1991 as a project of the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Croatia. In March 1995 the Government of the Republic of Croatia passed the Decree on founding of the CARNet institution with the purpose of facilitating progress of individuals, as well as of the society as a whole, through the use of new information technologies.

CARNet's activities can be divided in three basic areas:

  • Internet service provision,
  • encouragement of information society development and
  • education for the new era.

By systematically organising courses intended for end users, and through education programmes for future instructors and computer systems engineers, as well as special programmes like the Cisco Networking Academy, CARNet seeks to help its users in mastering and applying information technologies in their everyday life and work and in this way prepare them for information society.

CARNet has extensive experience in (inter)national collaboration with education and labour market stakeholders, and supports 1612 educational institutions in their ICT-supported collaboration activities, itself being one of the prime examples of institutional collaboration in Croatia.
