Types of videoconferences

The videoconferencing services, according to the type of connection used in a particular case, can be divided into two types:

  • Two-way conferences (point-to-point)
  • Conferences involving several sites (point-to-multipoint).

Point-to-point videoconference is a type of connection in which there are only two sides, having the same or compatible equipment. The connection can be established by any side.

Point-to-multipoint videoconference is a connection which involves more than two locations. The Multipoint Control Unit (MCU) establishes a connection by calling and including individual participants in the system. The number of locations which can participate in one conference at the same time depends on the Multipoint Control Unit capacity, and the one in the CARNet system can connect from three up to 24 locations at the same time.
