Under the slogan \u201eChallenge Accepted!\u201c, the 22nd CARNET User Conference was held from November 4th to 6th, attended by over 2000 participants via an online platform. Over the three days of the conference, the topics \u201eThis Is Our School\u201c and \u201eAI in Education and Education for AI\u201c were addressed through more than 80 interactive presentations and sponsor demonstrations, 36 workshops, one roundtable, and two panel discussions.<\/p>\n

\u201eAt this year's conference, we highlighted best practices for using digital technologies in education, some of which came to life during the isolation period, and we discussed artificial intelligence and its role in the future of the educational system using advanced big data analytics,\u201c he said. The first day of the conference saw the invited lecture attract a lot of attention. Dr. Wayne Holmes<\/strong> titled \u201eArtificial Intelligence and Education. Promise and Implications for Teaching and Learning\u201c.<\/p>\n

\u201eArtificial intelligence is already here and will be present in the future. Although we can do incredible things with it, it's not as intelligent as it's made out to be. In any case, artificial intelligence is increasingly being used in education and has the potential to transform education in a positive direction, but also in a negative one if we are not careful. That's why conferences like this are important because they provide teachers with an opportunity to learn what the use of artificial intelligence actually means, help them see the bigger picture, resist the allure of the exciting world of technology, and ensure that artificial intelligence embodies real human values and addresses real educational needs,\u201c believes Dr. Holmes.<\/p>\n

Participants had the opportunity to learn more about current developments in the e-Schools program and future activities that were presented. Andrijana Prskalo Ma\u010dek<\/strong>, deputy director of CARNET and head of the e-Schools project.<\/p>\n

\u201eThe CARNet User Conference has been a place for acquiring new knowledge and skills, exchanging experiences and ideas, for many years, but also a place for socializing, making new acquaintances, and future collaborations. Every year we try to surpass the previous conference and be better, which is why this year we accepted the challenge and moved the conference to a virtual environment in order to provide our users with insight into new trends in the application of digital technologies in education, despite the extraordinary circumstances, stated the Deputy Director.<\/p>\n

He spoke about the history of artificial intelligence and what we can learn from it for the future Dr. Markus Schatten<\/strong>, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Organization and Informatics.<\/p>\n

\u201eArtificial intelligence is slowly becoming ubiquitous, and we find it in almost every aspect of human existence. Accordingly, we can expect increasing use of AI in education through various technologies that show great potential in their application, such as conversational agents, personalization of learning through user analytics, expert systems, computer vision, agent simulations, and others,\u201c said Dr. Markus Schatten, adding that at this conference, some of the key aspects and challenges of using AI in education were presented to a large number of teachers in Croatia for the first time, significantly increasing the diffusion of these technologies in our educational system.<\/p>\n

Teachers from different parts of Croatia presented their experiences and examples of best practices in conducting online classes. In addition, the conference also discussed how to plan and organize distance learning, which tools to use in virtual classrooms, how to evaluate activities in an online environment, how to present teaching content, motivate students and communicate with them, and what are the advantages and disadvantages of distance learning.<\/p>\n

The last day of the conference was marked by a lecture Mom\u010dilo's Ace<\/strong> who responded to questions about what National AI Capital is as a concept and how the development of artificial intelligence could affect the differences between countries in the future, and also commented on the conference.<\/p>\n

\u201eThis was my first time attending the CARNET User Conference, and my impressions are beyond all expectations. The conference was of a very high standard content-wise, on par with major international conferences. I was particularly pleased to see the interactivity and curiosity of the very large audience. I think this is very encouraging for our education system. Conferences like these are extremely important because they encourage and support one of the most important segments of our society \u2013 teachers and professors. Even if the conference were held twice a year, it wouldn't be too much, as there will be more and more new global trends and useful knowledge,\u201c emphasized Aco Mom\u010dilovi\u0107.<\/p>\n
