On this day 26 years ago, the international organization ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), which is responsible for managing the global domain name system, assigned CARNET the management of Croatia's national domain.
The first registered domain was srce.hr, and since that day, the number of domains has been constantly growing, with 104,396 currently registered. Unlike other European countries, Croatia is the only one that allows its citizens and legal entities to register free .hr domains, thereby encouraging the creation of a virtual identity. Therefore, almost 70 percent of registered domains are free, while paid domains are registered exclusively with authorized registrars.
CARNET took over all management and administrative elements in 2012. At the same time, the paper-based domain registration concept was abandoned and introduced... online registration, which significantly sped up and simplified processes related to free domains.
All .hr domains are registered in accordance with Regulation on the organization and management of the top-level national internet domain. The latest amendments to the Rulebook allow for the registration of domains consisting exclusively of numbers, domains with Croatian diacritics, and domains consisting of one or two alphanumeric characters.
All information about the .hr domain can be found on the official website Domene.hr.
