CARNET CMS for schools is a system that allows for easy creation and updating of websites through a web browser.
CARNET CMS for schools
As part of the CARNET ID service, basic and secondary schools are enabled to use the CARNET CMS (Content Management System) service for schools.
CARNET CMS for schools is a system through which CARNET provides a web hosting service for school websites and editingI willand management of the school website's appearance and content, replacing the current CARNET web for schools service based on Strix.
The new service is based on the WordPress content management system (CMS) and the Divi website builder. CARNET has prepared templates and custom plugins to make it as easy as possible for users to get started with WordPress and Divi.
During the transition from the old to the new service, users were provided with a test environment in which they could developI willThe school's new website has been launched on WordPress, while the old Strix website remains accessible to visitors. A test environment is created upon the first access to the school's resource administrator service, and then becomes available to other school employees. The resource administrator within the service determines each employee's role and assigns them corresponding rights (Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor, Translator, or Subscriber).
The test environment becomes production, meaning the new public website replaces the old website, after the designated school resource administrator submits a request for production release from their school.hr address to helpdesk@carnet.hr.
Users
How to become a user
Any school in the Republic of Croatia that has an active CARNET CMS service can be a user of the CARNET CMS service for schools.I willn account in the CARNET system ID.
The test environment is created upon the first visit to the school's resource administrator service and then becomes available to other school employees. After the test environment is released into production, it becomes publicly available to everyone via the school's web address.
Access to the administrative interface is also possible for external school collaborators and students. To enable their access as well, the resource administrator needs to send an access request from their official school.hr address to helpdesk@carnet.hr.
Questions and answers
The new website has a total size limit of 3 GB.
The maximum file size that can be imported is 64 MB.
We back up your website and keep it for 30 days. If you need to restore your website to a previous version, please send a request from the named resource administrator's email address at helpdesk@carnet.hr.
Given that the system is based on a Multisite environment, you are unable to add any plugins. Such actions would be a security vulnerability for your website, as well as for the websites of all other CARNET institutions. You can send us a plugin proposal to helpdesk@carnet.hr which we will consider and add for all CARNET institutions that use CARNET CMS for schools.
You do not need to use CARNET templates. You can build a new website using numerous WordPress and Divi materials and instructions available through popular internet search engines (Google, Bing, etc.).
The approximate deadline for the transition is 12 months, or by October 1, 2024.
Access is granted to school employees, but the resource administrator must first access the system to create the website's test environment. Once the website's test environment is created, employees can access the system, and their user accounts will be created and added to the “Users” list. All employees have the role of Subscriber until the resource administrator changes it to another available role: Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor, or Translator.
We are able to create a local WordPress account for external school collaborators who are assisting with the creation of the new school website. To enable access for an external collaborator, a request for access must be sent from the email address of the school's designated administrator. The request must include the external collaborator's first name, last name, email address, the name of the school, and a link to the school's website.
Allowed file types are: jpg, jpeg, png, gif, pdf, doc, ppt, odt, ods, odp, odg, pptx, docx, pps, ppsx, xls, xlsx, webp, xml, dat, json, wie, mp4 and wmv, mp3.
The institution can migrate its existing website built in WordPress to CARNET's server using the import option within the WordPress interface. We note that some WordPress plugins used in the website's creation may not be supported on the CARNET CMS for Schools service for security reasons. Consequently, there is a possibility that the website will not function correctly, that not all content will be displayed, etc. We recommend adapting the website's content to the CARNET CMS for Schools service before importing.

The old school website will be archived by CARNET before the new one goes live and will be available at: https://web-arhiva.skole.hr/identifikator-škole
On the specified page, only archives of users who have used CARNET's web hosting service, i.e., who have used the old CMS for schools service based on Strix, will be available.
Accordingly, you will be able to create links to all old content that will be in the archive. In case you want to link content from the old website to the new website before going into production, the designated resource administrator from their official skole.hr address can send a request for archiving to helpdesk@carnet.hr.
Archives of old websites created in Strix will not be discontinued.
You can transfer current news via the “Strix News” option. You do not need to transfer any other content to the new website; instead, you can request the creation of an archive of the old website and merely put links to the archive of the old website on the new website.
The “Page Elements (Style Guide)” page within CARNET templates displays pre-prepared page elements for a specific template. In addition to sections, it includes definitions for fonts, colors, icons, images, etc. Changing the content on this page does not alter the template definition.
The listed page is only a “Sketch” and therefore is not publicly available and users of your website will not be able to access it.
In case you want to add or modify a color, it is also possible within the settings of any module where you can choose a color by selecting the “Global” option.
Instructions on how to change the global color are located at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmFD2UM1u5U
The color palette generator is located at the following link: https://coolors.co/
The font is defined in a Preset that is available on any text module, so if you want to change the font on the entire page, you do so by editing the Preset.
Find more information about Presets on the Divi Preset page.

“I think we all agree that the old website, besides having security vulnerabilities, is also terribly ugly with its old-fashioned design and very primitive capabilities. So I couldn't wait for the school where I work, and where hundreds of students, including my own children, come and work hard every day, to get a beautiful new website that will reflect how we breathe, what we do, where we are now, whether we are keeping up with trends or hibernating.
It took me time, concentration, and patience, and now is the opportunity to rethink and arrange everything. The winter holidays were ideal for that; otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to create something that would be immediately relevant and relatively good in such a short amount of time. I'm not completely satisfied yet.
I made a Cover Page as a template, and on it I put something that can also be used on additional pages, and then I made each new page by copying the Cover Page. A Posts category was mandatory for me on the Cover Page, so that everyone who wants to can quickly publish a short article with a picture. Even without the Divi module. There was also a lot of work involved in transferring documents, but the realization that the old website would be available as an archive was helpful to me.I will, so if I skipped anything, it's visible there. Even colleagues were „surprised“ because that was easier, but after mentioning „spaceship“ as a metaphor several times in conversation, they slowly start to understand. It is a great pleasure and motI will”compare this now and that before."

“Following the decision by the Quality Team of Juraj Dobrila Elementary School in Rovinj regarding the need to implement more modern school websites, we began their development in WordPress on our server. However, upon receiving notification of a new CMS service, we decided to host them on CARNET's system for a better quality of service.
After we chose a suitable template, we migrated the prepared content to CARNET's CMS system, and we resolved functional difficulties with the support of the Customer Service. The CARNET CMS system allows us to model the website according to our needs in the future, and the fact that more school employees are involved in the preparation and publication of content guarantees that the published information will be reliable, timely, and relevant.”

I am extremely pleased with the transition to the new CMS service for schools. This step has brought numerous benefits that have significantly improved our online presence. The new website, with its modern design, intuitive interface, and enhanced functionality, has become more accessible to everyone – students, parents, and teachers. The feedback I've received from students has been overwhelmingly positive, which gives me additional motivationI willThank you for your feedback. I am currently working on creating an anonymous survey that I plan to post on the homepage to get even more feedback.
Although I've been managing the school's website for several years, the process of switching from an old service to a new one was challenging, but also extremely beneficial. I did a lot of researchI willand studied the possibilities Winged divisor, used ready-made templates and edited themI willI learned this through trial and error. I gained a lot of useful information from the webinar „CARNET CMS for Schools“ in October 2023. The tool for transferring news from the old website was of great help to me because it allowed me to transfer all the content without problems and ensure the continuity of information.
Maintaining the website is now significantly easier thanks to the user-friendly content management system (Media Transfer tool (Media Collection) and documents (Document Library)) as uploading now takes „literally“ one second.
To publish a new news item, I use the same Layout, I just change the text and photos to make everything uniform. Also, there is an extremely wide selection of modules that make displaying even easierI willThe functionality and usability of any information on a website, both visually and practically.
All in all, I am extremely satisfied with this progress and look forward to further improving the website.
