CUC emphasizes digital transformation and AI in education.

October 29, 2020.

CARNET's User Conference (CUC) titled „Challenge Accepted!“ will be held for the 22nd consecutive year, this time entirely online online format. Due to the current situation caused by coronavirus, participants will follow a rich program via a virtual conference platform from November 4th to 6th.

The main themes of the conference are „This is our school“ and „AI in education and education for AI,“ which will be addressed through more than 70 interactive presentations, 39 workshops, two panel discussions, several research presentations, and roundtables.

The conference will be opened with a lecture Dr. Wayne Holmes, lead researcher in Nesta's innovation in education program. At CUC, Dr. Holmes will discuss the use of artificial intelligence in education and whether teachers should start early discussions with AI experts and entrepreneurs to ensure that the use of AI in classrooms is genuinely beneficial and always starts and ends with learning.

The first day of the conference will also be marked by a presentation of conducted and future activities, as well as the results achieved so far in the second phase of the e-Schools program, which will be held by the Deputy Director of CARNET and project manager, Andrijana Prskalo Maček.

Artificial intelligence will be discussed the day after tomorrow Dr. Markus Schatten, Associate Professor from the Faculty of Organization and Informatics at the University of Zagreb. With a lecture titled “Will Robots Steal My Job? A Brief History of Artificial Intelligence and What We Can Learn From It for the Future,” he will show that what we are currently experiencing in the field of AI is actually the third wave of artificial intelligence. During the lecture, he will also try to answer the questions of whether history will repeat itself or if we will learn something this time. What should we learn, and what knowledge and skills can help us to calmly embrace the new era that is emerging.

Participants of CUC will present within the theme „This is our school“ how they adapted their teaching online environment, how they created their own content or used online resources, how they collaborated and communicated with pupils, students, and colleagues, how they valued their achievements, and what challenges they overcame and what needs to be done differently.

The conference will conclude with an invited lecture. Momčilo's Ace on the topic „National AI Capital – First Results of a Global Study (What You Need to Know If You're in the Education Sector?)“. The lecture will discuss the biggest differences between countries and individuals, how AI development could affect these differences in the future, and what National AI Capital is as a concept, whether it is important, what experts think about NAIC, and how much time we have to react. One of Ace Momčilović's main lecture questions is also the future of AI projects in the educational segment.

22. The CARNet User Conference is held under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Croatia, Zoran Milanović, and the Ministry of Science and Education.
