About Us

The Croatian Academic and Research Network – CARNET is a public institution operating within the Ministry of Science, Education and Youth in the field of digital technology and its application in education. CARNET began its history in 1991 as a project of the then Ministry of Science and Technology, becoming the first and only internet service provider in Croatia. Four years later, the Government of the Republic of Croatia passed a Decree on the establishment of the CARNET institution for the purpose of innovating the educational system and promoting the progress of individuals and society as a whole through digital technology.

The CARNET network is a private network for the academic, scientific, and research community of the Republic of Croatia, as well as for institutions within the primary and secondary education system. Our services are available to primary and secondary school institutions, institutions from the science and higher education system, as well as numerous public institutions such as certain ministries, hospitals, etc. 4130 institution locations across Croatia are connected through the CARNET network. Our individual users are students, teachers, university students, professors, scientists, and other employees of CARNET member institutions, and in the segment of internet safety, all citizens of the Republic of Croatia.

Customer focus is the primary motivation for over 200 CARNET employees in nine cities – Zagreb, Rijeka, Osijek, Split, Pula, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Slavonski Brod, and Varaždin – who improve the institution's daily operations with their knowledge and experience.

By following the latest trends in digital technology, infrastructure, and education over the years, we design various projects and develop new services. Currently, we offer our users more than 70 services, ranging from education and training to multimedia, computer security, and user support. They access all services through an electronic identity within the AAI@EduHr system.

We provide user support for the Ministry of Science and Education systems – e-Matični and the National Information System for Secondary School Applications and Enrollments, and within the e-Građani system, we developed the e-Građani mToken credential. Our most well-known service is e-Dnevnik – a web application for keeping electronic class registers, used by almost all schools in the Republic of Croatia.

With the aim of building a digitally mature society, from 2015 to 2023, we implemented the “e-Schools: Comprehensive computerization of school business processes and teaching processes for the purpose of creating digitally mature schools for the 21st century” program.

We participate in important national and international programs and projects, depending on resource availability. We also participate in numerous international activities and collaborate with other European academic and research networks, the GÉANT Association, and organizations responsible for the global management of internet resources.
