On March 21, 2016, the global Eratosthenes experiment is being conducted, in which many schools around the world, at the moment when the Sun is in a suitable position, calculate the circumference of the Earth using a simple stick and measuring tape. Last year, 2015, over 800 schools participated in the experiment.
In Croatia, the experiment is being conducted as part of Inspiring Science Education projects co-financed by the European Union within the framework of the ICT Policy Support Programme (ICT PSP) of the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP).
Since the planned date, March 21, 2016, overlaps with the spring break in Croatia, the possibility of conducting the experiment on March 17 or 18, 2016, has been agreed upon with the organizers. The Croatian Academic and Research Network – CARNet invites all interested teachers to enrich their teaching and join their students in conducting this experiment and measuring the circumference of the Earth, just as the great Greek scientist Eratosthenes did.
To make participation easier for teachers, the Croatian Academic and Research Network – CARNet organized a webinar titled "Measuring the Earth's Circumference with Eratosthenes" Experiment – Simple and Modern!". The recording is available at https://connect.carnet.hr/p26c621oss9/, a presentation used at a webinar at http://www.slideshare.net/IseCroatia/ise-webinar-eratostenov-eksperiment-oujak-2016.
New ISE learning scenarios
We hereby emphasize that the experiment can be conducted with or without ISE learning scenarios. All teachers who conduct it with ISE learning scenarios will also have the opportunity to win free professional development in Greece. New, revised learning scenarios have been prepared for all interested teachers on March 7, 2016. All teachers who cloned the scenario before the aforementioned date are invited to clone them again at these links:
- Eratosthenes' Experiment – An ISE Learning Scenario for Primary Schools
- Eratosthenes' Experiment – ISE Learning Scenario for Secondary Schools
Instructions for conducting the experiment with the ISE learning scenario are available. here.
Competitions
Teachers are invited to join the competitions that accompany the experiment, a photo competition, and the aforementioned competition for conducting an experiment using the ISE inquiry-based learning scenario, as organizers will reward the most creative and successful participants with attendance at the ISE Summer School in Greece.
More detailed information about the competitions and further information about the experiment is available at http://www.carnet.hr/ise/eratostenov_eksperiment.
