Croatian teacher wins international ISE competition

May 24, 2016.

Croatian Academic and Research Network - CARNet coordinated the implementation of the Eratosthenes experiment in March as part of the Inspiring Science Education (ISE) project. 1142 schools from all over the world joined the experiment, and as many as 180 of them were from Croatia. The experiment was accompanied by two competitions, a photo competition and a competition for conducting the experiment using a research-based learning scenario. The tradition of Croatian teachers winning first places in these competitions was continued by Mrs. Marijana Karničnik, a teacher from Zdenko Turković Kutjevo Elementary School, who was awarded for the application of the ISE learning scenario among 89 applicants.

Teacher Karničnik won free participation in ISE Summer School in Greece. The official announcement of the competition winners is available here.Congratulations to the awarded teacher!

More information about the competitions is available at to this link.

We would like to remind you that in March 2015, the Eratosthenes experiment and a solar eclipse observation were also conducted, accompanied by three contests. All three winners were from Croatia and won free participation in the ISE summer school in Greece. Learn more about it here. Then, in September 2015, due to great interest, the Eratosthenes experiment was conducted again, and at that time, the prize for the photo contest ended up in Croatia. Find out more here.

About the experiment

Eratosthenes' experiment is a global experiment that measures the circumference of the Earth along a meridian when the sun's rays fall on the equator at a right angle, and which requires only a stick and the sun's shadow. Thus, students and their mentors around the world calculate the Earth's circumference using a simple stick at the moment when the Sun is in a suitable position. The goal of the experiment, among other things, is to encourage inquiry-based learning. With the aim of motivating schools in Croatia to register, CARNet has once again organized a webinar on the registration process for participation in the experiment.
