Within Scientix 4 The project, CARNET in cooperation with the Center for the Promotion of Science (Serbia) and the University of Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) is organizing a competition on climate change called the SEE (South-East Europe) Eco-STEAM Challenge. Teams of mentors and students from a total of 12 schools (four schools from each partner country) are participating in the competition.
The goal of this competition is to raise awareness about the effects of climate change that have affected southeastern Europe in recent years and to introduce possibilities for mitigating such changes. As preparation for the start of the competition, it was organized regional webinar where participants could learn more about the project topic, climate change, the relationship between climate and weather, and the further steps and activities that await them in the competition. The webinar was also attended by guest speakers, experts in the field of climate change; climatologist Prof. Dr. Vladimir Đurđević and meteorologist Nikola Vikić-Topić.
During May, mentor teachers, along with a group of students over a three-week period, will measure temperature and humidity and record weather phenomena in their school's environment. After completing the measurements, teams from all schools will compare the obtained results with results from previous years and, based on this, develop a proposal on how to mitigate climate change in their school district. The winning schools from each country will present their results and proposals at this year's CARNET User Conference – CUC 2022.
The selected schools to participate in this competition from Croatia are:
- Podmurvice Elementary School, Rijeka
- Petar Preradović Elementary School, Zadar
- Ivan Cankar Elementary School, Zagreb
- „Dobriša Cesarić” Elementary School, Osijek
More about the project itself will be published on the official project pages.
