News is a network service enabling a large number of users to exchange messages, debate and communicate via the Internet. News or Usenet service users access one or several news servers to send their messages to the world. Since servers exchange articles, an article sent from one server reaches a large number of readers in a very short time.

Messages are hierarchically organised in groups, and messages inside the groups are called articles. At the first level of classification, there are 8 top-level group hierarchies (the big eight), each of which is concerned with a particular area. There are various other hierarchies besides them, from national hierarchies to special interest hierarchies.

CARNET's news server is, where CARNET member users have full access to reading and writing new articles.
