The basic organizing principles of the domain name system have remained unchanged from the very beginnings of the Internet until today. Top-level domains are divided in two elementary categories: generic top-level domains (gTLD) such as .com, .org, .edu and country-code top-level domains (ccTLD) such as .hr, .uk, .si, .it.
Every country entrusts a specific, most often academic, institution with the organisation and management of the national domain name system.
The .hr top-level domain was registered on 27 February 1993, and it is CARNet that is the register for the .hr domain ever since then.
The core services offered by CARNet through the DNS service are registration and administration of domains, but the scope of activities of the DNS service is much wider and includes suggesting and implementing management policies for the national domain.
CARNet manages .hr, top level domain for Croatia, according to Ordinance on Organisation and Management of National Internet Top-level Domain.
